Its main objectives are to: provide a national platform for developing geo-informatics related resources and capabilities in the country, provide applications and solutions to all Governments, Central, State, Local self-governments in the area of geo-informatics, take up programmes for human resource development in the area of geo-informatics and take up R&D in the area of geo-informatics including use of open source technologies.

FIWARE provides public and royalty-free APIs that can be used by organizations, entrepreneurs and individuals to build and test innovative smart city applications, exploiting open data published by cities and other organizations. Several cities are already using FIWARE to export their open data in this environment.
